Aix en Provence, the Château de la Mignarde and Gourmet Lunch | Marseille | 26 October 2012

Located on the Golfe du Lion, Marseille is France's oldest city. The Vieux Port (Old Harbor) is Marseille's history book: Here you'll find Hellenistic fortifications, Roman docks, and Genoese architecture. The Canebiere – the city's main traffic artery – is a wide boulevard in the spirit of the Champs-Elysée.

We will travel from Marseille to spend the day in exquisite Aix en Provence. Mention the French region of Provence and fields of lavender and groves of olive trees come to mind. It’s a feast for the senses.

Before arriving in Aix, we will be treated to a private visit of the Château de la Mignarde under the guidance of its owner. Famous for having sheltered Pauline Borghese in 1807, this “bastide” represents the Aixoise spirit of the 18th century. The first house, property of a confectioner, was sumptuously remodeled and decorated in the Louis XVI style by his son, Sauveur Mignard in 1770. The facade, embellished with elements in dressed stone, dominates a garden ornamented by ponds and statues.

Departing the Château, we will arrive shortly in Aix en Provence. Aix was the capitol of Provence in the 15th century, Wealthy merchants and local dignitaries helped turn this city of art and culture into the “Florence of Provence” as we know it today.  Aix was the inspiration to many of the greatest writers and painters, Guigou, Stendhal, Mistral, Zola, and Cézanne.  The town center is best explored by foot and we will enjoy a private guided tour explaining the history and pointing out the highlights of Aix.

Having worked up our appetites, we will be treated to a gourmet lunch accompanied by wine at one of Aix’s finest restaurants.  Bon Appétit!

After lunch, we will return to the pier in Marseille by 3:30pm.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual elegant wear with comfortable shoes. Light to moderate walking on cobblestone streets and uneven surfaces.
